PSA: That guy who 'wins' every game by quoting rules wrong needs to stop

Last Thursday at a meetup in Denver, some dude argued for 20 minutes that Monopoly's Free Parking rule gives you $500 (which it doesn't) and then claimed he won. Has anyone else dealt with a rules-lawyer who just makes stuff up to feel good?

Oh this is such a classic move, and it's not just board games either. I've seen people do this at work with project deadlines, like "well technically the client said end of day Friday which could mean midnight" when they just didn't want to finish their part. My neighbor tried to argue that "no parking" signs in our complex don't apply to guests (they do, obviously) until he got towed. The whole thing feels like a shortcut people take when they know they can't actually win on merit. It's like they think if they just talk loud enough and pretend their made-up version is real, everyone else will get confused and just let it slide.

@the_jenny nailed it, it's just a power move hiding behind fake rules.
