Spent 3 hours explaining Catan to new players and they picked a winner anyway

Honestly, last Saturday at the local game shop in Portland, I taught 4 friends how to play Catan from scratch. They ignored half the strategy I laid out and the quietest person won by building the longest road out of nowhere. Has anyone else just given up on over-explaining rules and let newbies figure it out on their own?

Took a group of coworkers to a pub quiz once and spent 20 minutes going over the rules for the picture round. Explained how to identify landmarks, gave hints about famous bridges and buildings. One guy just wrote "Statue of Liberty" for every answer and got 4 out of 10 right. Now I just hand new players the rulebook and say "good luck, figure it out while I grab drinks." People learn faster when they mess up a few times anyway. My buddy still tries to trade me sheep for a brick that doesn't exist in our game.

Haha, wait so the sheep-for-brick guy-does he actually think it'll work one day, or is he just trolling you at this point?
