That hyped up deck builder I ignored ended up being pretty good

I spent 6 months dodging this game that everyone at my local shop kept pushing on me. Thought it was just another overrated flavor of the month, no way it could be that different. Then my buddy brought it to game night last Tuesday and I had to eat my words after the first round. The way the market shifts each turn actually forces real choices instead of just auto-piloting. Anybody else get burned by ignoring something popular for too long?

Oh come on, you just got lucky with that one. Most hyped games are exactly what you thought they were. I finally caved and tried that deck builder everyone was screaming about and it was just the same old thing with a different coat of paint. The market shift gimmick wore off after three plays and it was back to the same basic strategy every time. Sometimes your gut instinct is right and you should trust that you know what you actually like instead of letting the herd drag you into wasting money on cardboard you'll never touch again.

My local group had this whole thing with a game called "Greedy Little Piggies" or something similar, everyone was obsessed for like three months straight. I ignored it because the name sounded stupid, but then my cousin showed up with it at a barbecue and it turned out to be this super cutthroat resource management thing where you can totally screw over the person next to you. Ended up playing five rounds in a row and missing the burgers getting burnt on the grill. Now I make a rule to at least try anything once before I trash talk it, saves a lot of crow eating later.
