The whole 'Settlers of Catan is overrated' take feels wrong to me

I spent 3 hours teaching new players the basics last weekend and nobody wanted to trade wheat for sheep... still took another 45 minutes to finish a single game. Has anyone else noticed that people who hate on it are usually just salty about bad dice rolls?

My buddy Dave once ragequit a game because he built a road to a port only to realize wood was worthless when everyone else already had 12 of them. Is trading just a myth in your groups too?

Yeah but the trading thing is kind of on you, you're supposed to set up the board so everyone starts with at least one port and two matching resources or they just sit there with nothing to offer. The dice salt is real though, I've seen grown adults flip a table over rolling a 3 five times in a row.
