Took me 3 hours to figure out why my game pieces kept sliding off the table

I was demoing a new game at my local shop in Cincinnati last Saturday. The board kept shifting and pieces were all over the floor. I thought it was the table. Turns out the game mat I bought online had zero grip on the bottom. Swapped it for a cheap rubber shelf liner from the dollar store and it fixed everything. Has anyone else run into this with those fancy printed mats?

Have you ever noticed how often we pay more for something that actually works worse than the cheap solution? It's like with phone cases or kitchen gadgets, you spend twenty bucks on something "designed" for a purpose and it fails, but a two dollar piece of shelf liner from the dollar store saves the whole night. I've got a bunch of those printed mats too, they look great but they slide around on anything that isn't perfectly smooth glass. It's just one of those things where the fancy version skips the basic engineering because they're too focused on the cool art or the material feel. The rubber liner trick works for tablecloths and cutting boards too, it's pretty wild how one simple fix handles like ten different problems.

@daniel552 nailed it. Cheap fix beats fancy junk every time.
