Vent: I just realized I've been teaching games wrong for years
My friend's kid asked me 'why do we do that' during a game of Catan, and I couldn't give a good reason for a house rule I'd always used. It was a rule about rolling a 7 before your first turn, and I'd just copied it from my old game group without thinking. Has anyone else had a 'why do we even do this' moment with a classic game?

Oh man, I saw a whole blog post about that exact Catan rule.

My buddy got so mad about that rule he almost flipped the board. He spent twenty minutes looking it up online to prove he was right. The rest of us just wanted to keep playing.

Ugh, your buddy had the right idea. If you don't settle a rule right then, it just causes more fights later. That twenty minutes saves hours of arguing in future games. I'd rather get it right once than have someone feel cheated the whole night.
