Wrote off solo board games for 3 years, then my buddy in Portland left Spirit Island set up on his table
I always figured board games were a group thing, so solo play seemed pointless to me until I sat down with his copy of Spirit Island in Portland last month and played 4 rounds by myself. After about 90 minutes I got why people love it, no waiting on anyone, no one texting during your turn, and the puzzle actually gets harder the more you dig in. Anyone got a solo game that finally won them over after they swore off playing alone?
Four rounds in 90 minutes is a pretty good clip for Spirit Island, especially your first time running it alone. Did you play as a single spirit the whole time or did you try the two-handed thing where you control two spirits at once? That's the part that always gets me with solo play, because managing one spirit feels calm but running two turns it into a whole different puzzle. I'm curious if the difficulty ramped up because of the invaders or because you started seeing how your spirit's powers could combo in ways you missed early on. The "no one texting during your turn" thing is real too, people don't talk about how much dead time gets cut when you're the only one playing. So did losing to the invaders a couple times make you want to reset and try again, or were you good after those four rounds?
