Field fit-up guy told me I grind too slow, so I timed myself

Caught a hotshot fitter at the refinery gate in Baton Rouge last Tuesday. He watched me knock down a root pass for about 30 seconds and said "you're burning time, not metal." So I ran the same joint with a stopwatch after he left. Took me 11 minutes on a 6-inch schedule 80. His way, using a flapper at a steeper angle, cut it to 6. I still think his finish was rougher than I like, but he was right about the clock. Anyone else ever get called out like that and actually test it on site?
