I stick to judging heat by sight, no matter what the new guys say
That old school skill has kept my welds solid for decades.

Back when I was doing pipe welding for the gas company, my foreman always said the puddle tells you everything. I mean, I get why the new guys lean on their digital readouts, but my eyes never lied to me. Once you've seen enough perfect cherry reds and oranges, you just know. It becomes a feeling in your hands and what you see. Idk, maybe it's just me, but that old way kept me from a lot of cold laps and burn through.

Ngl, that foreman was right on the money. You can't replace looking at the metal itself. All the beeping gadgets in the world won't show you the exact wetting action or that tiny color shift right before things go wrong. My hands just know the vibration of a good bead now, it's like muscle memory. Relying on a screen feels like trying to paint a picture with your eyes closed.

My cousin's shop has more meters and gauges than a spaceship now, but hannaho52 still fixes all their mistakes by just watching the puddle like a normal person.
