Old timer told me my gouge was too wide and he was right

Was working on a weld prep job down at the Port of Tacoma last month, grinding out some cracks on a pressure vessel. Guy who's been doing this since the 80s walks by, stops, and tells me my gouge angle was leaving too much slag and wasting rods. I was running a 1/4 inch groove and he said to drop to 3/16 and take lighter passes. Switched it up that same afternoon and my rework time went from 45 minutes per joint down to about 20. Anyone else have a crusty old hand just walk up and change how you work overnight?

Bought a truck from a guy who looked like he was born with a wrench in his hand.

Man, that's the kind of interaction that sticks with you. I had a similar thing happen when I was first learning to weld structural stuff, an old ironworker just came over and started showing me how to set my heat better on a 7018 rod. He didn't even ask, just said "you're burning way too hot, gonna pop yourself." Changed my whole world in like two minutes. It's wild how a little tweak from someone who's been at it forever can cut your time in half and save so much headache. Those crusty guys are worth their weight in gold.
