PSA: The difference 10 years of stick welding experience made on a single repair job was night and day
I watched the same old welder fix a cracked boiler drum in 45 minutes at the mill near Tulsa that would have taken me 4 hours and still looked like garbage, so is it really just time or are there specific tricks older guys know that aren't in any manual?

Yeah that's the real deal right there. Those old timers have stuff burned into their hands that you just can't get from reading a book or watching videos.

Just gotta agree with you there man. My old man taught me how to weld when I was barely tall enough to see over the workbench and the stuff he showed me in five minutes took me years to really pick up on my own. You can't get that kind of hands on patience from a YouTube tutorial no matter how many times you pause it. It's a whole different level of trust and skill when someone's been doing it since before you were born.
