Switched from stick to flux core on a 1/4 inch firebox and cut my cleanup time in half
Last week I had to patch a crack on a small firebox for a buddy's outdoor boiler. I started with 7018 stick like I usually do, but I kept getting slag inclusions on the vertical up passes and spent almost an hour just grinding. So I switched to .045 flux core wire on my little 180 amp machine and ran the rest in about 20 minutes. The difference was night and day for me, since the wire fed smooth and I didn't have to stop every 2 inches to chip. My buddy said the weld looked cleaner too. But I know some of you guys swear by stick for anything thick. Has anyone else had better luck with flux core on boiler repairs, or am I just bad at stick on vertical up?
