TIL that fancy new welding helmet I made fun of actually works
I was dead set against those auto-darkening hoods for years. Thought they were a gimmick that would just break on site. My buddy Mike at the Marathon refinery job kept pushing me to try his Miller unit. Finally borrowed it for a 10-hour shift on a header repair last month. The clarity in the lens was unreal, I could actually see my puddle better than with my old fixed shade. Now I feel like a dummy for wasting 15 years squinting through a cheap lens. Anyone else hold out on a tool upgrade and regret it later?

Fifteen years is about how long I stuck with a $40 fixed shade from the hardware store. My buddy finally made me try his auto-darkening hood on a Saturday job last fall and I felt like an absolute fool. The first thing I thought was that I had wasted a solid decade and a half of my life basically welding blind. Now I look back at all those times I pulled my hood up to check my weld and just shake my head. I guess some of us have to learn the hard way that the new tools actually work.
