A guy in my book club argued that 'The Great Gatsby' is a terrible book

We were meeting at the library in Boise, and he said the characters are all just 'rich people with problems.' It made me realize how much a single strong opinion can shift a whole group's discussion. Has anyone else had a book club debate completely derailed by one person's take?

Ugh, that sounds so frustrating. It's like when someone just dismisses a whole book with a simple hot take and the whole talk gets stuck on that one point. We had a guy call "To Kill a Mockingbird" boring because it was a school book, and suddenly we were all defending our high school English teachers instead of talking about the actual story. It can totally ruin the vibe.

Derailed discussions? I just ask 'what's your evidence?'

My cousin once spent three hours arguing about the moon landing with zero facts.
