Book club member changed my mind about literary fiction

I used to think literary fiction was just boring rich people problems. Then Sarah in my Tuesday night group at the library picked "Train Dreams" by Denis Johnson. She said it was short but had more weight than 500 page novels. I read it in two sittings and she was right, the simplicity hit harder than any plot twist. Has anyone else had a book club recommendation totally flip what you like to read?

Funny enough it was "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy that did it for me. A book club buddy pushed it on me and I figured it was just sad dad stuff, but the stripped down writing cut right to the bone. Now I actually look forward to those quiet stories that don't lean on tricks.

Was it the bleak setting or the father-son dynamic that hooked you more?
