Can we talk about audiobook narration vs. reading, the debate nearly split our club

Our book club in Portland spent 40 minutes last Thursday arguing about whether listening counts as reading. I had to step in when two members almost walked out over it. Here's the thing, I compared both approaches with the same book, The Maze Runner, over 3 weeks. Reading gave me better recall of small details, but the audiobook narrator added voice tones that made the action scenes way more exciting. For our next pick, I'm making everyone choose one format and stick with it, no switching mid-chapter. Has anyone else had this argument blow up in their club, and how did you settle it without losing members?

Forty minutes over this? That is wild. I can't believe two people almost walked out over how someone else enjoys a book. Our club had a similar blowup, but it was over someone returning a library copy with dog ears, and that nearly ended a 12 year friendship. Did you actually have to physically separate them, or was it more of a yelling match?
