Debate over tea vs coffee got wild at last book club meeting

We were discussing a mystery novel set in a cafe and someone asked if the detective would order tea or coffee. Next thing I knew, two members were arguing about which drink is more 'intellectual' for 20 minutes. The host had to pull out a timer and limit each person to 2 minutes. Has anyone else had a book club debate spiral into something totally unrelated?

Oh man, our group once spent an entire meeting arguing if Gandalf actually preferred red wine or ale.

You ever notice how we do that with stuff we actually care about though? Like my friends and I spent three hours debating whether pancakes or waffles are the superior breakfast food last weekend. @jaken23 it's funny because we treat these random details like they're life or death decisions, but really it's just us trying to connect over something we love. Same thing happens with movie endings or favorite songs sometimes.
