Ugh, I know exactly what you mean. My dentist got super into the history of toothbrushes after we disagreed on a podcast... now I get a ten minute talk on bristle types with my polish.

South Carolina's dental board actually has a policy about this, believe it or not. It says dentists should avoid non treatment related lectures during appointments because it puts the patient in a captive audience. Your dentist mixing a personal debate with a professional service kinda crosses a line. It makes it hard for you to speak up or leave, which isn't fair. You're there for a cleaning, not a seminar. Maybe they just don't realize how awkward and one sided it feels from your side of the chair.
