I finally figured out why my book club fights about the ending of every novel

Last month at our Tuesday meeting, someone called the protagonist 'unlikeable' and three people nearly walked out over it, so I started tracking our debates across 12 books. Turns out, every single blowup happens when we confuse plot logic with character motivation, like the time we spent an hour arguing about a train schedule in a 1920s mystery. Has anyone else noticed that the biggest fights always come from people reading the same words but picturing completely different scenes?

12 books and only ONE train schedule argument? thats crazy low honestly. my group had a 45 minute fight about whether a character would realistically eat a sandwich at a funeral, and we were literally holding the book in our hands with the page saying he ate it. the funniest part is when people argue about "what would i do in this situation" like theyre the main character, but theyre reading a fantasy book where dragons exist and suddenly realism matters for the food choices.
