I finally stopped trying to read every book my club picks

For years, I forced myself to finish every single book, even the ones I hated (like that 500 page historical novel about 18th century tax law). About six months ago, I gave myself permission to quit after 100 pages if it wasn't working. Now I just read a good summary and join the talk anyway. It made the whole experience way more fun. Has anyone else tried a rule like this, or do you feel you have to finish the book to have a real opinion?

500 pages on 18th century tax law sounds like actual torture.

Right? Why would anyone put themselves through 500 pages of tax law? I did the same thing with a book about a kid growing up on a fishing boat. Everyone else loved it, I was bored to tears by page 50. Now I just skim the first few chapters, read a summary online, and show up to the meeting ready to talk. Way less stressful. My book club actually agreed to start doing "optional finishers" so nobody feels obligated anymore.

Ever heard of the 50 page rule? I quit a book last week and felt zero guilt.
