I spent $45 on a book club pick that our group hated

Our club chose a new fantasy book last month that had a lot of hype online. I bought the hardcover for $28 and the special reader's guide for $17, thinking it would be a big talk. We met last week and everyone was bored. The story moved too slow and the main character was flat. One person said, 'I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did.' We spent maybe ten minutes on the book before we just talked about movies instead. I felt bad for pushing the pick and wasting the cash on the guide nobody used. Has your group ever picked a book that just fell totally flat?

Eh, it's just a book club.

Oh man, don't let my bank account hear you say that. I've bought so many hardcovers for clubs and then just... stared at them (you know, with that special kind of regret). My shelf is basically a monument to good intentions and bad spending.

Ugh, that's the worst! We switched to library copies after a few pricey duds.
