I switched from arguing about endings to asking about themes after one brutal debate

My book club spent 45 minutes last Tuesday fighting over whether the main character in our June pick actually died or not, and nobody changed anyone's mind. Then our newest member asked us what the ambiguity itself was doing for the story, and suddenly we were actually talking about the book instead of defending our pet theories. Has anyone else found that reframing the discussion question before the meeting keeps the debate from going in circles?
