My book club forced me to read a romance novel, I nearly got kicked out for laughing

Tbh, I joined this group in Austin last fall thinking we'd stick to thrillers and sci-fi. Then someone picked a steamy romance where the hero literally whispers about his 'thunderous heart' every other page. I laughed out loud at chapter 3 and the moderator gave me a death stare across the table. Has anyone else survived a genre swap that went totally sideways, or are we all just pretending to love the cheesy lines?
