My book club met at a diner in Tulsa and the menu margin notes started a whole fight
Last Tuesday our club met at a diner in Tulsa because the library was closed for a book sale. I grabbed a menu and saw somebody had written "skip chapter 3" in pen next to the daily special, and it turned out four of us had read that same copy over the years. We spent 40 minutes arguing about whether notes in shared books are a gift or just rude, and we never got to the actual book. Two people want to start leaving our own notes in the margins for the next group to find. Is that fun or just annoying for whoever reads it next?
Man, this reminds me of a used copy of a hiking guide I bought online that had someone's notes all over the trail maps. Half of them were helpful like "water source here is dry in summer" and half were just "this hike sucks" which made me laugh. I'd say the fun kind of notes are the ones that actually help the next person, and the annoying ones are the inside jokes nobody else gets.
