My book club's 'no spoilers' rule fell apart over a character's death

We were discussing a mystery novel, and someone casually mentioned the detective's partner dies in chapter fifteen. Half the group hadn't gotten that far, and the debate about spoiler etiquette got louder than the one about the plot. What's your club's policy for accidental reveals?

Our rule is to mark page numbers before speaking.

Marking pages first, like @cora604 said, really saved my group.

Remember my old group imploded over a spoiler for a season finale. We spent more time policing each other than actually enjoying the stories. Now I just read books alone, problem solved.
