Our group in Denver split over a character choice in 'The Goldfinch' last month

Half of us felt Theo's actions after the bombing were understandable given his trauma, while the other half called him selfish and poorly written. The debate got so heated that two members almost left the club over it. Where do you stand on characters making bad choices versus just being badly written?

Damn, that's rough when a book club gets that intense lol. Bad choices can feel real, but if a character's actions don't match their setup at all, it just breaks the story for me.

Totally agree, @ericfox. I just ask if the choice at least makes sense for who they are now, not who they were ten chapters ago.

So what's the worst character break you've ever read? Like a total 180 that made you put the book down.
