The $40 annotated copy that nearly split our club in half
Back in 2017 I grabbed a used annotated edition of The Great Gatsby for 40 bucks, thinking the footnotes would help the younger members. Instead, one guy refused to read it because the notes told him what to think, and another said it was the only way she got through it. We spent a whole meeting arguing if extra context ruins the reading experience or just saves time. Has anyone else had a specific edition or format cause a bigger debate than the book itself?

Man, that sounds EXACTLY like the kind of fight that kills a book club’s vibe. I feel for you, because once people start arguing about how to read, the actual story gets buried under everyone’s pride. At least you know your group cares enough to get heated, even if it’s about the footnotes instead of the prose.
