The month our club nearly split over a single character's fate

We read 'The Dutch House' last fall, and for three meetings straight, the debate about Maeve's choices got so heated... One member, Sarah, actually brought printed charts to prove her point about the inheritance plot. It got quiet enough you could hear the neighbor's dog barking. Has your group ever had a fight that almost ended things?

Honestly those heated talks are the whole point of a book club.

Exactly, it's not a real meeting until someone's almost crying over a fictional character's life choices. I mean, if we all just politely agreed, we might as well be discussing the phone book. The best clubs have that one person ready to fight for a terrible take, it gives the rest of us something to aim at.

lol same here. I'm usually the one getting way too worked up over a side character nobody else even remembers. Last month I actually had to take a breather because someone said my favorite character's redemption arc was "predictable." Like ok sorry I enjoy a good cliche now and then. But honestly those arguments are the only reason I keep showing up, the snacks are just a bonus. I'd rather leave a meeting feeling fired up than bored out of my mind.
