Vent: That debate last night about unreliable narrators got way too heated

We were at Sarah's apartment downtown, and I just wanted to talk about how The Girl on the Train uses an unreliable narrator to build suspense. But Dave kept cutting me off, saying I was 'missing the point' and that the book was actually about alcoholism. After like 20 minutes of back and forth, I finally just packed up my stuff and left. Has anyone else had a book club debate spiral like that where someone just won't let the conversation move? The whole thing left a bad taste, and I'm not sure I even want to go back next month.

That thing about Dave cutting you off and not letting it go? I've noticed this pattern everywhere lately, not just in book clubs. It's like people can't just have a conversation anymore, they have to win it. They hear one thing you say and latch onto it as if their life depends on proving you wrong. The part where you said he kept saying you were "missing the point" really hits home for me. I saw the same thing happen at my neighbor's cookout last weekend when someone mentioned a movie and another guy just would not drop his take on it. It sucks the fun out of everything when someone treats a discussion like a debate they have to dominate. Honestly, if this is how the whole group is, I wouldn't blame you for skipping next month.

Oh wow yeah it's like everyone suddenly thinks they're on a debate show or something. Next time someone pulls that "you're missing the point" crap I'm just gonna say "yep you got me, guess I'll go rethink my whole life now" and walk away.
