Warning: our book club went from 11 people to 4 in about 8 months and I think I know why
When I joined this club back in 2021 we had 11 regulars showing up at the library on Tuesdays and people actually argued about the books. Around the middle of 2023 something shifted. The organizer started sending out a voting poll to pick the next book, and at first it seemed nice, more fair. But then people just voted for whatever sounded easy and stopped showing up to defend their pick. We went from real fights about whether the ending of a book worked to nobody saying anything at all. By this spring we were down to 4 of us and two of those just nod along. I think the poll killed the argument, and the argument was the whole point. Did your group switch to voting, and did it help or hurt?
