Am I the only one who spent 4 years folding grain the wrong way before a bookbinder in Portland showed me her signature stack?
I kept fighting wavy spines on every coptic stitch journal I made, blaming my thread tension, and then she grabbed my finished notebook at the spring workshop, bent it, and said 'your folds are all fighting each other' so now I need to know, does anyone else fold with the grain direction opposite on every other section, or am I the last binder on earth to learn this?
It makes total sense once you think about how the fibers run, so alternating them keeps the whole block from pulling one way. In my experience the bigger fix is folding every section with the grain of the sheet itself, and once I started doing that my spines finally laid flat.
