Dropped $85 on a Chinese book press that bent on the second book
Bought one of those blue cast iron book presses off the big online store. Seller listed the plate as 1/4 inch cast steel. It is not. I put my first book in it, tightened the wheel by hand, and heard a crack. Pulled the plate out and it had bowed about 1/8 inch in the middle. I only use it now as a doorstop in my garage. Anyone here got a press under $200 that actually holds up? I do maybe 10 books a month, so it does not need to be a tank.
Man that crack sound is the worst. I had a similar deal with a cheap arbor press I got for flattening bottle caps, thing flexed so bad the handle just spun loose after like five caps. My grandpa used to say you can't trust cast anything unless you know the guy who poured it, and I never got what he meant until I started buying tools online. Half these listings just say "cast steel" when it's pot metal with a nice paint job. For 10 books a month you might honestly do better with two thick cutting boards and a stack of encyclopedias, sounds dumb but it works and nothing bends.
