Finally fixed a sewn board joint that kept failing on me

I've been trying to get a clean sewn board joint for my last 3 rebinds and every time the cover would pull loose after a week. Turned out I was using too much glue at the hinge point and not letting the linen dry long enough before closing the boards. I backed off the adhesive to just a thin layer and let it sit for 4 hours instead of 2 and the test book has held solid for 10 days now. Has anyone else dealt with cover separation on sewn boards and found a trick that works?

That's the thing with bookbinding (and honestly most crafts), so many issues come down to being too impatient. Your glue discovery makes total sense, it's like when people rush bread dough and wonder why it's dense. Letting that linen dry out completely is probably doing more than just preventing separation, it's letting the fibers really grab the boards once they're closed. I've noticed this pattern in woodworking too, where rushing a glue up just guarantees a weak joint later. Trusting the slow process over your own enthusiasm is hard but it pays off every time.

Used to think rushing was fine but you totally changed my mind on that.

Yeah. Been there too many times myself. It's hard to learn that slow is actually the faster way in the long run when you just want to see something finished.
