Looking back, I wasted about $80 on a cheap corner rounder punch that mangled leather and paper alike.
I stubbornly used it on a whole batch of 15 notebooks before admitting the cuts were too rough and uneven, so what's a good mid-range tool for clean corners on thicker cover stock?

Was it one of those green plastic ones? I saw a video where someone said the Tonic Studios corner punch is way better for thicker stuff.

My old green one snapped on some 300gsm cardstock last month. I ended up getting the Tonic punch after reading reviews, and it really is built different. The metal handle has way more leverage, so it goes through thick layers without jamming. I've been using it on chipboard and even thin leather without any trouble. It was worth the extra cost to not fight with my tools anymore.

That exact thing happened to me with a cheap punch ruining some good cover stock. I felt that sting of wasting both money and materials. Seeing the uneven cuts on a finished project is just the worst. I finally upgraded to the Tonic punch too, and it was a total game changer. The clean cuts on thicker paper make all the difference and it just feels solid in your hand.
