My recent job made me question the ethics of book restoration.
Some insist on keeping everything original, even if it risks damage, but others say using new methods is better for the book's life. What do you think is right?

The best restoration balances keeping the original with using safe new methods.

But where do you actually draw the line on a tough project? Like, if you have to choose between saving original material that's slightly damaged or replacing a whole section with something new but super stable, what's the real tipping point for you? Got a specific example?

What about the book's future readers though? If you replace a worn page with a perfect copy, you lose the feel of history in your hands. Like, touching a 200 year old letter that's a bit soft tells a story a crisp new sheet can't. Sometimes keeping the damage is part of keeping the truth of the object, even if it's more fragile.
