Old timer told me to stop wetting the spine before casing in, I argued for a week then tried it
He runs a bindery in Pittsburgh and said moisture causes the boards to warp on layered paper, so I did 20 test bindings with dry spines and 18 came out flatter than any of my wet ones, am I the last one doing this the hard way?
Reading this made me laugh at myself because I spent years treating the spine like a houseplant that needed watering. Turns out all that moisture was doing exactly what your bindery guy said, making the boards swell and bow while they dried. Your 18 out of 20 flat result pretty much settles it for me, that is not a fluke, that is proof. Part of me wants to defend the wet method because it is what I was taught, but the numbers do not care about my feelings. Guess I will be drying out my spines and eating a little crow at the same time.
