Vent: I was pressing spines wrong for a decade

I've been binding books since 2011 and always creased the spine with a bone folder before gluing. Turns out that weakens the hinge on sewn bindings, I learned that at a workshop in Portland when the instructor pointed out the crack in my test copy. She showed me a 1987 manual that said to round the spine lightly and let the glue do the work, no pressing. I redid three journals that way and they flex way better now. Anyone else unlearn a habit from an old book or a random pro?
