Warning: spent $120 on a bone folder and it made my folds worse
I bought a $120 ebony bone folder from a shop in Chicago because everyone in a Facebook bindery group swore it was the only way to get crisp signatures. Six books later I noticed my folds were cracking along the spine, and a local binder in Des Moines pointed out the cheap plastic one I got for $4 actually has a smoother edge that doesn't burnish the paper. So what is the actual reason everyone keeps pushing the expensive ones, is it just the look or am I missing something about how these are supposed to be used?
