Back in 2019, I had to pick between a full sun or shade garden plot.
My old yard in Austin only had two spots left, one got 8 hours of direct sun and the other was under a big oak. I chose the shady spot because I wanted to try ferns and hostas. It worked out okay, but everything grew really slow and stayed small. Anyone have tips for getting more color in a low-light garden?

Try adding some coral bells or astilbe for pops of color. They handle shade pretty well.

Totally! Astilbe saved my shady corner.

Astilbe really pulls its weight in those dark spots. I put some in under a big maple tree where nothing else would grow, and it filled in like a champ. Just make sure to water it good the first year until it gets settled. The plumes keep coming back bigger every season too. Solid plant for sure.
