Had to choose between my prize rose bush and a new fence last spring

I was about to tear out my grandmother's 15 year old climbing rose 'Peace' variety to make room for a privacy fence in my backyard in Austin. Instead I spent $80 on a trellis kit and trained the rose up the fence posts. Has anyone else had to decide between keeping a beloved plant and fixing something in their yard?

Oh man, I feel this so hard. I once spent three hours digging up a hydrangea I'd babied for years just to install a new hose spigot (spoiler: I killed the hydrangea anyway, and the spigot still leaks). Your trellis idea was genius, I wish I'd thought of that instead of just hacking away at roots like a lunatic.
