My 200 dollar grow light almost torched my seedlings last March

I grabbed a cheap full spectrum panel off an auction site, 200 bucks total, and hung it too low without checking the heat output. Three days later my basil and tomato starts had crispy edges and droopy stems, looked like a tiny desert. The box said 24 inches away but the real sweet spot was closer to 36, and I only figured that out after losing half a tray. I ended up rigging a cheap thermometer and a ruler to test distances, took another 2 weeks to recover the survivors. Has anyone else burned seedlings with a budget light that lied about its specs on the label?
