My air layer failure in Austin changed how I see root cuttings

I spent 8 weeks air layering a fig branch and it rooted fine, but the stem snapped off in a storm before I could cut it free. Meanwhile a plain cutting I stuck in a soda bottle of plain water rooted in 3 weeks with zero fuss. Why do we push the fancy techniques when the simple ones work faster, has anyone else had a method surprise them like that?

Why do we suffer for figs when water works? Karma for overthinking.
