My neighbor's 3-word comment about my compost pile stopped me cold
I've been building this compost setup in my backyard for 2 years now, turning it weekly and adding kitchen scraps like a proud plant dad. Yesterday my neighbor Jim, who grows prize-winning dahlias, watched me dump a bucket of banana peels and said, "you're feeding the pile, not the soil." At first I was defensive, but he walked over and showed me how my pile was too wet and dense, basically a stinky green lump instead of a balanced mix. I spent the evening adding 2 bales of straw and some shredded cardboard to fluff it up, and I realized I never once thought about what the final compost would actually do for my garden beds. Has anyone else had that moment where a simple observation made you rethink your whole routine? How do you balance your browns and greens now?
