Shoutout to that $60 moisture meter I bought off Amazon

I thought I was being smart getting a cheap moisture meter for my orchids. Turns out the thing was just randomly guessing numbers, killed two of my prize phalaenopsis in a month. My buddy who grows carnivorous plants told me he had the same model, threw it away after a week. Anyone else get burned by one of those $50-and-under meters from Amazon?

Borrowed one of those from a neighbor once, watched it read "bone dry" on a pot I had just watered an hour earlier. Did you ever try sticking it in distilled water to see if it would at least calibrate to 100%? I'm curious if these things are just random number generators like you said or if they're actually measuring something, just not the right thing.

Makes you wonder how many other things we buy are just guessing too.

Maybe the real issue is cheap knockoffs instead of an actual useful tool.
