That garden center lady told me I was drowning my roses and she was right

I was watering my roses every single day like clockwork. Some woman at a local nursery in Austin told me I was basically giving them root rot. She said to stick my finger in the soil and only water when the top two inches are dry. Switched to that method about 3 months ago and the leaves stopped turning yellow. Now I water maybe twice a week at most and they actually bloomed this spring. Any of you guys follow a strict watering schedule or just wing it?

Still managed to kill three succulents last month by overwatering somehow.

...and that's exactly what my neighbor did last spring, bought six of those cute little Haworthias and then drowned every single one because she kept forgetting she'd already watered them that week. She'd come home from her nursing shift, see them looking a bit wrinkly (which they do sometimes even when overwatered) and just dump another cup of water in. The irony is she was trying so hard to keep them alive that she basically gave them root rot in slow motion. Now she's got a single survivor sitting on her porch in this gritty little pot with drainage holes the size of my pinky nail.
