The 300 year old oak at Windsor Great Park has a hollow trunk you can stand inside, and I spent an hour just staring up
Took the kids to Windsor Great Park last Saturday and the ancient oak there has a trunk so hollow you can walk right in, but what got me was the little ferns and moss growing all up the inside walls like their own tiny forest, so I'm wondering if anyone else has stumbled on a tree like that and knows whether that kind of inner growth hurts the tree or is actually fine?
Tbh I found an old maple like that behind my grandma's place in Vermont and the inside was basically a cave with mushrooms growing out of the wood. Old trees like that are usually rotting in the middle anyway, and it doesn't really kill them since the live part is just under the bark, but the ferns probably love all that damp dead wood. Kind of cool that it turned into its own little world in there.
