Visited the Denver Botanic Gardens last weekend and their 'native plants only' section felt more like a weed patch than a garden.

What's the difference between a weed and a native plant to you?

Honestly, the whole "native" label feels like gardening snobbery. A weed is just a plant growing where someone doesn't want it, and plenty of natives will take over your yard just as fast as any introduced species. Bindweed is native in parts of the US and it's a total nightmare to control.

Wait, is it really that big of a deal? I've seen the native section at a few gardens and yeah, some of it looks a little wild. But isn't that kind of the point? Natives are supposed to be tough and grow on their own without a ton of fuss. Calling it a weed patch seems harsh when it's probably just doing what it's supposed to do. Like, if you want perfect rows of flowers, you go for the annuals, not the local stuff. Who cares if a garden section looks a bit scraggly as long as it's helping the local bugs and birds?
