Does anyone here think we are skipping over the ethical side of BCIs too fast?
Last week I watched a demo where a paralyzed man moved a robotic arm just by thinking, and everyone cheered. But then I read the fine print about who owns the neural data he was generating, and it felt like we are all rushing to the tech while ignoring the privacy side. My question is, should we be pushing for regulations now, before this gets commercial, or is that just going to slow down progress for patients who need it today?
Nothing says "we thought this through" like giving a guy a robot arm and burying his brain data rights in paragraph 47 of a user agreement. We did the same thing with social media and phones, and look how great that turned out for our attention spans. Regulations now do not have to mean freezing out patients, since safety rules for medical devices already exist and nobody calls those a roadblock. The real joke is acting like "move fast and break things" is fine when the thing getting broken is somebody's thoughts.
