PSA: I watched a quadriplegic guy in Austin move a cursor with his thoughts and it wrecked my whole view on BCIs
I went to a demo at a lab in Austin back in March and a guy who hasn't moved his hands in 11 years just typed a sentence on a screen by thinking about it. The cursor moved slow, maybe one letter every two seconds, but he smiled the whole time and nobody in that room said a word. I walked in thinking noninvasive headsets were toys and implants were the only real path, and I left with my head spinning. Here's the part that got me: he said the setup cost about $400 in parts and the hard part was just the training, not the hardware. I've been reading about this stuff for two years and that hour in that room taught me more than every paper I skimmed. So what am I missing, why aren't more people building cheap rigs like this instead of chasing $50k clinical systems?
