Rant: I thought non-invasive BCIs were a toy until a demo at the Cleveland Clinic open house last Saturday
I have been a total snob about EEG headsets for a while now. Like, if it is not drilled into the skull it is basically a mood ring, right? That was my whole thing. Then my cousin dragged me to a public demo day at the Cleveland Clinic last Saturday because she works in their neuro rehab wing and got me a guest pass. This guy there, maybe 40, fully paralyzed from the chest down after a bike crash, was wearing this mesh cap with wet electrodes and using it to move a cursor on a screen to spell out words. Not fast. Maybe two letters a minute. But he cracked a joke by picking letters one at a time and the whole room laughed. I stood there for like 20 minutes watching his face, not the screen, and something clicked for me. The implant stuff gets all the hype but this guy was typing with a shower cap and some gel right in front of me. Has anyone here actually tried a consumer EEG setup for anything beyond sleep tracking? I want to know if the signal is usable or if I am just going to get frustrated again.
